چکیده

The inelastic Lorentz gas in cooling states is studied. It is found that the inelastic Lorentz gas is localized and that the mean square displacement of the inelastic Lorentz gas obeys a power of a logarithmic function of time. It is also found that the scaled position distribution of the inelastic Lorentz gas has an exponential tail, while the distribution is close to the Gaussian near the peak. Using a random walk model, we derive an analytical expression of the mean square displacement as a function of time and the restitution coefficient, which well agrees with the data of our simulation. The exponential tail of the scaled position distribution function is also obtained by the method of steepest descent. E-mail:[email protected] E-mail: [email protected] 1

Brownian motion in a granular gas.

The dynamics of a heavy particle in a gas of much lighter particles is studied via the Boltzmann-Lorentz equation with inelastic collisions among all particles. A formal expansion in the ratio of gas to tagged particle mass transforms the Boltzmann-Lorentz equation into a Fokker Planck equation. The predictions of the latter are tested here using direct Monte Carlo simulation of the Boltzmann-L...

Impurities in inelastic Maxwell models

Transport properties of impurities immersed in a granular gas undergoing homogenous cooling state are studied. The results are obtained from the Boltzmann-Lorentz kinetic equation for inelastic Maxwell models in d dimensions. The kinetic equation is solved by means of the Chapman-Enskog method up to first order in the density gradient of impurities. The mass and heat fluxes associated with impu...

The theory of statistical mechanics is studied in the presence of Lorentz-violating background fields. The analysis is performed using the Standard-Model Extension (SME) together with a Jaynesian formulation of statistical inference. Conventional laws of thermodynamics are obtained in the presence of a perturbed hamiltonian that contains the Lorentz violating terms. As an example, properties of...

Spectral analysis of the transfer operator for the Lorentz gas

We study the billiard map associated with both the finiteand infinite-horizon Lorentz gases having smooth scatterers with strictly positive curvature. We introduce generalized function spaces (Banach spaces of distributions) on which the transfer operator is quasicompact. The mixing properties of the billiard map then imply the existence of a spectral gap and related statistical properties such...
